当館の目的
Our Mission
ジャポニスムとは、一言で表すと、日本文化の海外進出とその世界的影響である。当館ではジャポニスムにかかわる図書や美術品を保管し、それらと海外の図書や美術品とを比較し、並列に展示することによって両者への理解と鑑賞を深め、さらにはその歴史的関係の解明に役立つことを目的としています。
To preserve, exhibit, and research art and publications related to the history of japonisme around the world.
当館では、よく知られている印象派やアールヌーボーのジャポニスム例だけでなく、18世紀や20世紀における日本美術や文化の世界的な影響も追究しています。視覚芸術はもちろんのこと、文学や音楽、祭事や日常生活に現れた日本文化の影響の例も展示に取り入れてあります。日本の江戸時代～現代のファインアートや民芸などと、世界の著名な芸術家の作品から大量生産された日用品までを、照らし合わせて解説していきます。

The Museum exhibits cover lesser known aspects of Japonisme including its relation to Art Deco, Surrealism, Fauvism, the Vienna Secession, Abstract Art, Pop Art, Graphic/Commercial Design, Modern Architecture, Comics, Modern Sculpture, Photography, Literature, Music, Games and Pastimes, Fashion, Festivities and Holiday Customs, and much more. Just to mention a few of the artists examined: Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, Kunisada, Kunichika, Yoshitoshi, Tezuka Osamu, Matisse, Gauguin, Klimt, Chagall, Bauhaus, Margritte, Modigliani, Miro, Warhol, DC and Marvel Comics. The exhibits compare Japanese art and artifacts with those from around the world with extensive explanations, often based on original research. The applicability of the ideas contained within are not limited to the study of japonisme alone, but can be applied to better appreciate art and culture in general. Come to The JAPONISME MUSEUM and begin an odyssey into a whole new way of cultural interpretation and understanding!

抽象芸術と白黒写真における
「触感」のジャポニスム
Edo and Meiji Textures in
ABSTRACT ART & PHOTOGRAPHY
ここでいう「触感」とは、自然界の触感を芸術に取り入れ、土・石・植物などのいわば「触り心地」を伝えようとする、日本美術の特徴の一つを意味する。また、煙や霧など、渦状のもの、人間を包み込み肌で感じ取れる流動的なもの、こうした形はないが感知されるものを表わす作品の性質をいう。そうした触感的感性が生み出す作品の影響が「触感のジャポニスム」である。茶道や華道、書画や石庭、 岡倉天心の『茶の湯』や谷崎潤一郎の『陰翳礼賛』を含む、多様な翻訳本や輸出向け工芸品を媒介して、日本の触感的美学は海外で注目され、芸術家の造作的な刺激となった。

アールデコ

ART DECO
上の「触感のジャポニスム」は、わかりやすく言えば「ゴツゴツ」・「モヤモヤ」のジャポニスム。これに対して、アールデコのジャポニスムとは、日本の洗練された高級工芸品に見られる「ツルツル」・「ピカピカ」のジャポニスムである。この二種類のジャポニスムは対照的ではあるが、日本の伝統工芸や装飾はアールデコ的なデザイン性にも長けている。アールデコの特徴としては、光沢のある漆黒に金や銀、または濃い朱色その他漆器の色彩、はっきりとした流線形または幾何学的模様などがある。具体的には、市松模様、波線と直線の組み合わせ、ジグザグ、忠臣蔵・新撰組の羽織の「だんだら」端模様、旭日旗のような放射線状や、扇の形を抽象化したモチーフなどがある。これらは日本の江戸・明治時代から前例の多い図像や模様であり、１９２０年代～３０年代前半の間では欧米各地で、その面影がファション・インテリア・ジュエリーなどのアールデコ作品に現れるようになる。
